There is yet another plot twist in the Parti Quebecois leadership race. On Saturday, leadership hopeful Alexandre Cloutier confirmed that Quebec provincial police had asked to be kept informed of his itinerary as well as saying they were monitoring social media platforms.

The Sûreté du Québec would not confirm nor deny they were investigating the matter, citing privacy issues.

The measures were put in place following a declaration on social media by rival Jean-François Lisée, insinuating Cloutier had ties to controversial muslim leader, Adil Charkaoui.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Cloutier said he received numerous hateful messages and “violent insults” after the post was published.

Cloutier’s team denied any connection with Charkaoui and said Lisée’s actions were unacceptable.

Friday evening, Lisée clarified his position stating that people had read too much into his post.

“Yes Charkaoui has said good things about Alexandre, but these are flowers that Alexandre neither asked for nor wanted, obviously.”

Cloutier reached out to Lisée Friday evening asking him to remove the posts from social media. He reiterated his request Saturday and Lisée finally accepted and issued an apology.

Candidate Martine Ouellet said the pair’s discussion on secularism was detracting from the real issue –Quebec independence.
