Ten students and one adult were taken to hospital after a school bus was involved in a collision west of Edmonton Friday morning.

The crash happened at 8:21 a.m. just west of the city, near Range Road 261 and Township Road 514 in Parkland County.

A bus carrying students from Parkland Immanuel Christian School in southwest Edmonton collided with a car. The bus was headed to a nearby school, located at 21304 35 Avenue N.W., at the time.

Alberta Health Services said dozens of children and five adults were assessed by EMS. None of the injuries were life-threatening, however, the adult driving the car was taken to hospital in serious condition.

According to Richard Veldkamp, vice-principal at Parkland Immanuel Christian School, 34 students between the ages of five and 18 were treated by EMS. He said 10 were taken to hospital with minor injuries while the others were brought to the school to be assessed by paramedics there.

Police said all parents were notified, and the kids who were not hurt were taken to school.

“There’s always a little bit of stress and anxiety in a situation like this but I’m impressed with my staff and the way that things worked,” Veldkamp said, while adding the school would look to see if anything could have been done better.

“Anytime we have a serious incident we look at our policies, we look at our procedures and how well they were executed and how we could improve on the situation.”

Veldkamp added he was extremely thankfully none of his students were seriously injured and that his thoughts were also with the driver of the car involved.

“From what I’ve heard, the driver of the other vehicle was more seriously injured and so our prayers go out to that person and their family. I hope that things will turn out OK for them.”

The bus appeared to be on its side in the ditch, however it’s not known exactly what caused the collision. An RCMP collision analyst was sent to the scene to investigate.
