Conservation groups succeed in buying, protecting Troop Island off N.S. coast

HALIFAX – Groups trying to preserve an island in Nova Scotia’s St. Margaret’s Bay have succeeded in raising enough money to purchase the property.

The Nova Scotia Nature Trust and the St. Margaret’s Bay Stewardship Association have been campaigning for donations that would allow them to buy Troop Island from a private owner.

The groups say in a news release issued Friday they have secured the deed to the island.

A spokeswoman for the St. Margaret’s Bay Stewardship Association says support has been overwhelming.

Ella McQuinn, a volunteer and past chair of the association, says residents of the province showed a “deep desire” to protect coastline and natural places.

The groups say the island has beautiful beaches and shoreline vistas, as well as old-growth forest, intertidal marsh lands and a diverse bird population.
