Underpass on Marion St. not affordable, report recommends cheaper option

A report is recommending Winnipeg find a cheaper option to building an underpass on Marion Street. Zahra Premji / Global News

WINNIPEG — There will be no underpass coming to Marion Street anytime soon.

The City is being asked to look for ‘more affordable’ design options to alleviate traffic flow after a study concluded an underpass or overpass on Marion Street would be too much money.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Cost estimates for a grade separation to move traffic either over or under rail lines in St. Boniface were pegged at $566 million.

A study has since concluded “Public Service is not recommending moving forward with Option 2, due to affordability concerns.” It also says the amount of debt-load that would have to be considered “would exceed the maximum debt limits” approved.

The results of that report will be handed over to City Hall next week.

Plans for an overpass or underpass along Marion Street date back to 1974.
