Île aux Tourtes Bridge: over budget and behind schedule

Problems on the Île aux Tourtes Bridge continue to persist after contractors repairing the support piers discovered a cracked beam on the structure’s south side.

Work to repair the bridge was supposed to finish last spring.

Now, according to Transports Quebec spokesperson Dominique David, the job won’t be complete until the fall.

The cost to fix the bridge has also increased by $3 million.

Lane reductions will remain in place during the repairs and will only open back up when the entire project is complete.

David told Global News that more studies will be conducted on the bridge in the near future.

This will allow engineers to determine whether the entire 50-year-old span needs to be completely replaced or if more repairs will be done.

About 83,000 vehicles cross the Île aux Tourtes Bridge every day.
