Premier Alison Redford looks back on her first year as leader of Alberta

It has been one year since Premier Alison Redford came into power in Alberta. Since then it has been a year full of ups and downs for Premier Redford.

In October 2011, it was a win not many predicted when Redford took the PC Leadership from the heavily favoured Gary Mar. It was a win that was rather bittersweet for Redford.

“The greatest regret was that, also very personal, that my mom passed away before the leadership campaign and so she didn’t ever get to see me as Premier,” said Redford.

Six months after Redford took office, an election was called. After a month of being pitted against Wildrose leader Danielle Smith, Redford won a decisive victory in what many have called the closest race Alberta has ever seen.

“The high was a very personal one with my daughter the night of the provincial election. Right after we saw the results come in, and they came in so quickly, we were having a debate about whether or not she’d be staying up to watch the results so was excited that they came in so that she could stay up, and she’s 10 years old and she looked up and me and she said ‘mommy, i’m proud of you’ and that was pretty special,” Redford recalled emotionally.

Since then, the road has been a bumpy one. However, through it all, from unveiled expenses to plummeting oil prices, Premier Redford remains positive.

She says she is happy to see that Albertans trust her enough to continue to share their stories with her.

“That’s so special because, very often, people face difficult challenges, and one of the reasons that they tell me those stories is so that I can make their lives better. I think that is an incredible privilege and I take that very seriously and try to work everyday to do that.”
