Environment Canada says plants may be damaged or destroyed by frost.

A large high pressure ridge over Alberta will push into southern Saskatchewan Monday night bringing the first widespread frost of the season to most regions overnight.

Skies are expected to gradually clear tonight as the ridge pushes in, with winds becoming light.

This will allow temperatures to drop to zero to -3 across most regions overnight into early Tuesday with widespread frost expected.

-1 to -2 is where Saskatoon is expected to drop down to on Tuesday morning, feeling like -5 with wind chill. SkyTracker Weather

Areas that are slower to clear may escape with little or no frost, which may include areas in eastern Saskatchewan towards the Manitoba border.

The agency recommends people to take preventative measures to protect frost-sensitive plants and trees.

Saskatoon Forecast

Today

The day started off a bit cool, around 2 degrees, but that’s mild compared to where we’re headed tonight.

Story continues below advertisement

After some light drizzle overnight, mostly to partly cloudy skies started the day with northerly winds at sustained speeds in the 20 to 30 km/h range with gusts upwards of 40 km/h at times.

The mercury was stuck in single digits right into the noon hour, when a temperature of 9 degrees was hit, with an afternoon high struggling to get into double digits under mostly cloudy skies for the rest of the day.

Tonight

An arctic high pressure system will clear skies out overnight tonight, dropping in the coldest air Saskatoon has seen since mid-May.

For the first time in over 130 days the mercury will fall below freezing, down to an overnight low around minus 2 degrees with frost expected.

With a killing frost expected, particularly in low-lying areas, be sure to cover any frost-sensitive plants or anything that could be susceptible to damage from an early season frost.

Frost advisories will be issued this afternoon by Environment Canada.

As we cool down overnight, there will also likely be some fog patches developing across the region.

Tuesday

A moderate southerly flow will kick in Tuesday and help warm us back up out of the chilly, below freezing morning that’ll feel like mid-minus single digits, around -5 with wind chill to start.

South-southwesterly winds at sustained speeds around 20 to 30 km/h with gusts upwards of 40 to 50 km/h at times through the day.

Under mostly sunny skies, we’re expecting to warm up to around 16 or 17 degrees in the afternoon.

Wednesday-Friday

We’re looking at a warm, dry end to the work week, which is undoubtedly good news for farmers in the middle of harvest.

Under some ridging in the upper atmosphere, we’re expecting to remain under mostly sunny skies both Wednesday and Thursday with just a few more mid and high level clouds on Friday.

Daytime highs are also expecting to recover, back into the low 20s by Wednesday, climbing into the mid-20s by the end of the work week.

Weekend Outlook

It looks like the warm air should carry us through Saturday with a daytime high in the mid-20s expected before a cold front may drop temperatures a few degrees for Sunday.

At this point it looks like Saturday may have a bit more sunshine than cloud cover and Sunday may be the opposite with a bit more cloud cover than sunshine with a slight chance of showers and windier conditions along that front.
