WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have traded quarterback Drew Willy to the Toronto Argonauts in exchange for defensive back TJ Heath, a first round draft pick in 2017 and a third round draft pick in 2018.

The Bombers have also acquired quarterback Kevin Glenn from the Montreal Alouettes for a fourth round pick in the 2017 CFL Draft.

Once dubbed Winnipeg’s franchise quarterback, Willy struggled this season before being benched. He was only able to lead the Bombers to a single victory in five games. Willy completed 137 of 191 pass attempts for 1,473 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions during those outings.

The 29-year-old American was eventually replaced by Matt Nichols who has since carried the Bombers to six straight victories – their longest win streak since 2001.

“Ultimately, for a variety of factors, we felt this was the right move for our football team both short and long term,” said Bombers General Manager Kyle Walters in a press release.

The Bombers signed Willy to a three year contract extension in May 2015. Willy missed most of last season after suffering a right leg injury.

Willy thanked the club and community on Twitter early Monday morning for supporting him during his time in Winnipeg.

Glenn returns to Winnipeg seven years after being released by the Bombers. He led the team to a Grey Cup appearance in 2007. Glenn sits third on the Bombers all-time passing yardage list and has thrown the fifth most touchdowns in the team’s franchise history. The 16 year CFL veteran has started nine games with Montreal this season, completing 222 of 314 passes for 2,547 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Heath is tied for the league lead in interceptions with five. The rookie has also recorded 37 defensive tackles in ten games with the Argonauts.

“The opportunity to acquire a first round pick next year along with a player we have really liked this season in TJ Heath, and an experienced quarterback in Kevin Glenn was something we needed to strongly evaluate,” said Walters.

Willy and the Argonauts visit Winnipeg this Saturday to face the Bombers.
