After months of training and mental preparation, runners pushed themselves to the limit Sunday as they hit the pavement for the 16th Annual Queen City Marathon (QCM).

The event draws thousands of runners and spectators each year, including Global Regina’s Blake Lough, Dave Parsons and Krista Sharpe who all completed in the 21.1-kilometre half-marathon.

The fastest time for the full 42.2 kilometre marathon goes to Regina’s Iain Fyfe who completed the race in two hours and thirty five minutes, edging out the runner-up by 25 seconds.

“It felt really good, with everyone cheering. Just being able to stop (running) and being happy about it, it’s a great feeling,” he described.

Fyfe has placed second for the past two years, beat out by Camrose, Alta’s Brendan Lunty. Last year, Lunty edged out Fyfe by 15 seconds. In 2014, Lunty came in 35 seconds faster than Fyfe.

Despite the back and forth, Fyfe said the rivalry is all in good fun.

“Every year it’s us battling it out, and every year until this year, he got me. But we managed to switch it around this time,” Fyfe laughed.

“[Lunty is] a super nice guy. Nicest guy in the world,” he said.

The run is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. Fyfe said he hopes to run in the QCM for years to come.

“It’s so fun because you just get the whole city out and even people that aren’t running know about it. It’s just a great event,” Fyfe said.
