Another life-line for Kelowna’s Fintry Queen

Another life-line has been thrown at Kelowna’s Fintry Queen.

The Kelowna icon has been sitting idle at the base of Bernard Avenue for several years, looking for a new owner.

The ship is the subject of a court-ordered sale.

Doug Mayzes of Kelowna says he’s ready to purchase the ship with a little cooperation from the City of Kelowna.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The city wants the ship moved because of unpaid moorage fees, said to be in the tens of thousands of dollars.

Mayzes says he has a management team in place, ready to take over the ship, if the city of Kelowna can guarantee it a home.

Kelowna mayor, Walter Gray, says he personally likes the ship but adds the city has no intention of bailing it out or subsidizing it.

Mayzes says if Kelowna doesn’t come through, he’ll see if Penticton or Vernon might be interested.

Mayzes knows a thing or two about boats. He launched the Spirit of Kelowna last summer. It’s the only paddlewheel boat on Okanagan Lake.
