A 17-year-old has been charged after police said he allegedly killed 10 captive birds on a Kingston, Ont. campground.

Kingston police said the owner of the Rideau Acres Campground went to check up on his birds in a small coop around 9 p.m. Saturday, when he “came across the teen holding a dead chicken and pigeon in his hands” with the other birds lying dead around him.

Officers arrested the teen at the coop and charged him with injuring or endangering animals, a crime that includes killing.

Police said the teen’s parents were notified and he was released with a future court date.

The maximum penalty for the offence is five years imprisonment. Due to the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act the suspect cannot be named.
