For the past seven years volunteers have helped restore Penticton wetlands by planting trees.
TD Tree Days is taking place September 18 from 9 a.m. to noon at Riverside Park. Volunteers will be called on to plant more than 550 shrubs.
The annual event is put on by the Okanagan Similkameen Stewardship, City of Penticton and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.
“The park contains essential wetland habitat, home to several species of birds and amphibians, many of them at-risk,” said Lia McKinnon with the Okanagan Smilikameen Stewardship. “Wetlands also help control flooding and provide water filtration.”
“With 85 per cent of the Okanagan’s wetlands already lost, restoration and protection of our remaining wetlands is critical.”
If you want to take part you can sign up here. Volunteers are asked to dress for the weather, wear appropriate shoes and bring gloves and a shovel.
