Close call with drone for Air Canada jet landing in Saskatoon

An Air Canada jet landing in Saskatoon on Thursday had a close call with a drone.

According to an incident report filed with Transport Canada, the flight crew spotted the drone while on final approach at John G. Diefenbaker International Airport.

It was approximately 30 metres from the aircraft.

The crew was able to land the Embraer 190 safely.

No injuries were reported.

The report states the drone was in controlled airspace and there was a potential for conflict.

According to Transport Canada, drones are not allowed within restricted or controlled airspace and should not be flown closer than nine kilometres (five nautical miles) from any airport.

In this instance, the drone was flown approximately 2.5 nautical miles from Saskatoon International Airport.
