Jail for killing elderly pedestrian

A young Kelowna man who struck and killed an elderly pedestrian nearly three years ago has been handed a jail sentence.

It was December of 2009 when Shirley Ching was in a crosswalk in downtown Kelowna.

She was run over by a pickup truck turning left onto Bernard from a side street.

Ching died instantly.

Ziyazen Hawari, 25, initially pled not guilty but changed his plea to guilty just before the start of his trial.

Hawari has been sentenced to 3.5 years in jail and banned from driving for four years.
