Police in Victoria said thieves have been using so-called skimmers to capture financial information from debit and credit cards used at ATM machines.
Police have investigated three separate cases involving skimmers, devices that are placed over card slots on ATMs to intercept financial data.
“The ATM machines that were targeted were private or independent machines in high tourist-travelled areas,” Sgt. Derek Tolmie said.
They are warning shoppers and businesses to take steps to protect themselves.
Police said a good way to spot a skimmer is to pull on the plastic casing around the card slot.
If it’s a skimmer “you should be able to pull it off easily enough,” Tolmie said.
