New Mormon temple unveiled in northwest Calgary

CALGARY- A breathtaking new landmark has been unveiled in northwest Calgary.

A Mormon temple has gone up in Royal Oak-the eighth in Canada and the third in Alberta, which will serve 25,000 members in the Calgary area.

No expense was spared in the build, which features marble from Spain and granite from Brazil and China. A wheat motif in the stained-glass windows are used to represent the province.

“It has beautiful materials, just as was done in ancient Israel, they used the finest materials and workmanship,” said member William Walker. “We’ve tried to follow that pattern.”

Church members aren’t saying how much the building cost, but say it was funded by members.

Despite its large stature, the temple won’t be used to host huge gatherings.

“The purpose of the temple is to participate in small religious groups, for ceremonies, for weddings and baptisms,” Walker explained. “It’s not intended to be a large assembly hall.”

An open house will be held September 29 through October 20. After that time, the church will be dedicated and only members will be allowed inside.
