Deadly crash prompts warning about moose

 CALGARY- The public is being warned to be on the lookout for moose, following a deadly weekend on the roads.

Over the weekend, a 73-year-old Calgary man was killed after the vehicle he was in hit one of the large animals on Highway 93 near Radium. The driver, a 67-year-old Calgary man, was rushed to hospital in serious condition.

Less than half an hour earlier, two vehicles were damaged after hitting a moose on the Trans-Canada just west of Calgary.

There have been a number of moose sightings in and around Calgary lately, and it’s all due to ‘moose rutting’ season. That’s when the animals wander in search of a mate.

Officials said drivers need to keep an eye on the ditches since animals can jump out quickly and cause serious damage.

“[Moose] are tall animals, most of our vehicles-particularly cars-end up knocking the legs from under them,” explained Tom Biglin, a fish and wildlife officer. “The body comes back through the windshield, so that makes them particularly dangerous.”

Dawn and dusk are when moose are most active on the roads.
