Doug Ford calls out Global News

TORONTO – The rocky relationship between the Ford clan and the media continued Monday as city councillor Doug Ford targeted Global News during a phone-in interview on a local radio talk show this afternoon.

On the Arlene Bynon Show on AM640, Ford said he confronted a Global News employee whose vehicle was parked outside his family’s Deco Labels & Tags printing business last Friday.

“I go outside our plant, at Deco, and there’s some guy in an unmarked car hiding around the corner, and you don’t know if they’re in to break in or whatever,” said Ford. “So I pulled up beside him, and I asked him what you were doing and he didn’t answer me.”

He further went on to say: “I said I was going to call the police, so on so forth, and sure enough it was someone from Global. If it’s not someone from Global, it’s from the Star, if it’s not from the Star it’s something else outside our house, they follow you around.”

“I expect Councillor Ford will be pleased to hear that Global News was following his good guidance and doing our due diligence on the story about road repairs done out in front of the Ford family business. Our assignment desk sent a camera to the site to shoot video of the street scene for the News Hour. According to our camera operator, Councillor Ford did approach our vehicle, our staffer identified himself and explained what he was doing. There was nothing confrontational. Contrary to the Councillor’s comments on AM640, there was no threat to call police. In fact, the camera op described the exchange as cordial.”

Last week, media reports indicated Mayor Ford personally asked city officials to approve road repairs in front of his business before its 50th anniversary party in August. Ford denied he did anything wrong.
