Crews continue to battle wildfire in Chilliwack River Valley area

A 17.2 hectare blaze is burning east of Cultus Lake in Chilliwack.

Fire crews continue to battle a 17.2-hectare blaze east of Cultus Lake in the Chilliwack River Valley area.

Close to 60 firefighters, four helicopters and three fire trucks are at the scene.

“It’s a very unified effort, we’re working very closely with BC Wildfire,” said Jamie Leggatt, with the City of Chilliwack.

“They are backing us up with their expertise and helping provide resources as well,”

The wildfire is currently 35 per cent contained.

The fire was reported around 3 p.m. Friday afternoon and it was initially estimated to be one hectare in size. The area was under an extreme fire danger rating.

Leggatt says winds have slowed down, but there’s no estimate on when the fire will be fully contained.

She says there is currently no risk to the public because of the location of the fire.

“There’s no concerns for structures or residences at this time, it’s a very remote area,” Leggatt said.

However fire crews are asking the public to stay away from the area and from the Chilliwack River – particularly Alison Pool – because it’s being use by helicopters to pick up water.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
