Concerned parents call for changes to playground zones

CALGARY- Some families in south Calgary are calling on the city to make changes to a playground zone that they say isn’t protecting their children.

The playground zone along Midlake Boulevard goes into effect at 8:30 a.m., but class starts at 8:15 a.m. at Midnapore School.

“There’s a history behind how the playground zone came to be,” explained parent Allison Warga. “It used to be two school zones, but they found people were speeding in between the two.”

That’s when the city added a playground zone in between, but parents say they want it to go into effect when children are actually walking to school.

However, times are set by the province, not the city.

“The city is stuck in the middle where we have to invest thousands of dollars for re-signage, or hopefully we have to get the province to back up the time frame,” said councillor Peter Demong.

Student patrols are now in place to help children cross the busy road, and the school council has written to the province asking for earlier start times for playground zones.
