It was being dubbed ‘the bummer summer’ after a relatively cool July but health experts are now issuing some advice as temperatures rise this week.

This is the first stretch of prolonged heat in Metro Vancouver and if the forecast delivers we’ll see the warmest temperatures so far this season.

Maximum temperatures will approach record values of about 35 degrees in some inland locations today. Near the water temperatures are expected to reach about 25 degrees.

Winds will gradually shift to onshore Friday, reducing temperatures by a few degrees.

The high temperatures may be welcome but they also come with a health warning and tips on how to avoid sun damage.

“Make sure you drink lots of water or lots of fluids,” said Dr. Meena Dawar, medical health officer. “Stay cool and check in on your family members, on your neighbours who may be living alone.”

“And finally, don’t leave pets or children in parked cars during the heat.”

There is an unwelcome side effect of the warm weather as well.

Metro Vancouver says the number of odour complaints is up from last year. The regional district has already had more than 600 bad smell calls this summer.

The biggest number of complaints are coming from residents in Richmond.

Metro Vancouver says most of the complaints are related to an animal processing plant in East Vancouver and composting digestion facility in East Richmond.
