The federal government is contributing $126,000 to help pay for upgrades at the Shubenacadie Canal.
Darren Fisher, Member of Parliament for Dartmouth-Cole Harbour made the announcement on behalf of Navdeep Baines, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development on Monday at the Fairbanks Centre in Dartmouth.
The money will be used to help with construction and upgrades to the docks, portage links and a storage shed along the waterway. It will also assist with interior upgrades to the Fairbanks Centre along with the Lock 5 and Alderney Centre storage facilities.
A portion of the funding will also be used for marketing purposes to enhance the Canal’s position as a strategic tourism destination.
The Shubenacadie Canal Commission is also contributing $90,612 towards the project which is set to begin immediately.
The Shubenacadie Canal was originally constructed between 1826 and 1856 and stretches from the Halifax Harbour to the Bay of Fundy.
Today it is a popular paddling destination for recreational canoeing, kayaking and other small watercraft.
