Canada’s Hilary Caldwell has won bronze in the 200-metre backstroke.
Caldwell, 25, finished the race with a time of 2:07.54.
American Madeline Dirado won gold and Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu took silver.
“I looked up and saw the three lights on the blocks so I knew I was third,” said Caldwell. “I was happy, but I did want the gold medal. I think I saw the time and gave a little scowl.”
Still, she’s happy to see all the success the women’s swim team is having this Olympics. “It makes the podium so normal, which is something Canada has never had at the Summer Olympics,” she told CBC.
So far, all 10 of Canada’s medals this Olympics have been won by women. Six of those have been in swimming events.
“I can’t be too upset. I’m on the podium,” said Caldwell. “A podium is what I said I wanted coming in here and I’m pretty pleased with that.”
