Police and firefighters were confronted with a putrid situation in Saint-Hubert, on Montreal’s south shore Thursday.

Police said they found about 60 cats living inside a home located on Legault Street.

First responders had to wear hazmat suits and oxygen tanks before entering the home to ventilate the rooms.

Neighbours had been complaining about the smell coming from the premises.

The homeowner was not onsite at the time and had been hospitalized the day before the intervention.

The man was apparently living in an RV parked outside the home.

He could face charges if he’s found to be in violation of municipal codes.

The cats have been sent to Longueuil animal services.
