A Calgary man accused of benefiting from a fraudulent cancer fundraiser is recovering in hospital, after allegedly being beaten up at the Calgary Remand Centre.
Kristopher Cook’s lawyer Joel Chevrefils tells Global News the 29-year-old was attacked inside his cell.
It happened on Sunday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Cook suffered serious injuries including a broken nose, a lacerated spleen, damage to his left eye and bruising on his torso and chest.

He’s being treated in hospital for the injuries.
There’s no word yet on when he’ll be transported back to his cell at the Remand Centre.
Chevrefils says his client is pretty shaken up.
Cook is accused of taking money from a silent auction held at the downtown Calgary bar Broken City in July 2011.
Approximately $7,500 was raised but police say some attendees became skeptical about whether or not the man actually had cancer.
A police investigation was launched last month, and the economic crimes unit concluded the money was raised under fraudulent pretenses.
Cook was arrested in Victoria a week ago.
He is charged with two counts of fraud over $5,000.
