City crews in Coquitlam have part of a commuter route open again this morning after a sinkhole caused a water main to burst last night.
Water flooded the intersection of Glen Drive and Johnson Street beside Coquitlam Town Centre.
When crews arrived, they found a 25-metre sinkhole had caused a water main to burst, flooding the parkade of a nearby apartment building.
Coquitlam Fire Asst. Chief Gary Mulligan said when crews arrived they “responded and we had some water going into our low-rise four-storey walk-ups, two and a half feet of water in the basement. Crews went right into rescue mode and making sure we didn’t have any people in trouble.”
The City of Coquitlam said a result of last night’s water main break, residents in the surrounding area may see dirty water coming from their taps this morning. To clear your water, simply run a bathtub or shower tap on cold until the water runs clear. This should clear the water for the entire home. The same goes for residents living in apartments.
The intersection is partially open as crews work to repair the hole. The road is expected to open by 9 a.m.
