A handful of pedestrian bridges around Calgary are getting makeovers this summer.
The Peace Bridge, the Prince’s Island Park Pedestrian Bridge and the Penbrooke Meadows Pedestrian Bridge are all undergoing maintenance work.
Peace Bridge to remain ‘fully open’ during repairs
The Peace Bridge will have six broken glass panels replaced – with the help of a robotic cart which can run along the top of the bridge.

According to City of Calgary spokesperson Brittany Kustra, using the robotic cart will allow for the bridge to remain open when work isn’t being done.
“The Peace Bridge is going to remain fully open to pedestrians during the day. They won’t see evidence of any work being done,” Kustra said. “When we do the work at night, we use sort of a rope/pulley system to descend the panels down and replace them.”
The bridge will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. while the panels are being replaced, with work expected to be completed by Aug. 10.

New non-slip surface added to Prince’s Island Park Bridge
City crews will be installing a new non-slip walking surface on the Prince’s Island Park Bridge which connects Prince’s Island Park to Memorial Drive.
“The non-slip surface coating on the bridge has just worn out and gotten to the end of its life cycle,” Kustra explained. “So we’re replacing that coating on the bridge.”

According to the City of Calgary, the new surface is being installed in sections, which means the bridge will remain open during the work.
However, pedestrians are warned to watch for scaffolding and cyclists are asked to dismount from their bikes as the work is underway.
Penbrooke Meadows Pedestrian Bridge to open by 2016-17 school year
The pedestrian bridge that connects Penedo Way S.E. over the railway tracks is closed for repairs until September.
It’s going to undergo railing enforcement, concrete repairs and the installation of new treads and grating on the stairs.
“We’re just doing some structural work to make sure that the bridge is sound and can continue to be used,” Kustra said.
The bridge is expected to re-open before the start of the school year.
