Cyclists
in Regina are
asking for more bike lanes on city streets.

“I
think they’ve got to do more with bike lanes or bike specific streets,” said
Lawrence Vanderlinden, who works at Dutch Cycle. He’s been biking around the
city for more than 20 years, and sees it is an enjoyable way to get to work.

He’s
one of many Reginans who prefer to travel on two wheels instead of four.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“For
me it’s therapeutic, riding to work. I’m awake when I get to work, and I’d
rather do it than in a car any day,” he said.

The
city has acknowledged that it has heard quite a bit from residents on this
issue, and it is working to build up Regina’s
biking infrastructure.  However, there
are some roadblocks in the way.

“It
means taking space from a way the roads have already been used,” said Kelly
Wyatt, Director of Development and Engineering at the City of Regina.

“There
may be parking there. It may be used as a turn lane; it may mean even dropping
a traffic lane.”

Meanwhile
cyclists are making use of the bike lanes already in place. Avid cyclist Andrea
Nelson bikes all year long, even in the winter. She would also like to see more
places to ride safely.

“I’d
love to see more bike lanes and just general infrastructure changes,” she said.
