Fire causes $1,000,000 in damage

The arson strike force is investigating an early morning fire in the city’s West End, Saturday.

Crews say the fire started just before 3 a.m. on Notre Dame Avenue, just west of Balmoral Street.

Fire crews were originally called out for a bin fire in the area that quickly spread to a building that housed a residence and a business swallowed by flames.

Police say the fire started at the rear of the building which quickly spread to the adjoining businesses.

All occupants of the building vacated without injury.

Damage is estimated at approximately $1,000,000.

Due to the fire, westbound Notre Dame Avenue from Balmoral Street to Langside Street is temporarily closed.

Emergency personnel remain on scene.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area until further notice.
