Maple Leafs sign 1st-overall pick Auston Matthews to 3-year entry level contract

TORONTO — The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed top draft pick Auston Matthews to a three-year entry level contract.

The centre from Scottsdale, Ariz., was the first overall pick in last month’s draft in Buffalo.

There were reports that the team had balked at the bonus demands of the Matthews camp but that issue appears to have been resolved.

The 18-year-old Matthews had 24 goals and 22 assists in 36 games in the Swiss league last season.
