Police say motorists will likely see a drop in red light stops and hopefully collisions with the introduction of new timed traffic signals on Richmond and Adelaide streets.

The new signal operation comes into effect a week after the city lowered the speed limit from 50 to 40 kilometres per hour on both downtown corridors.

“By reducing the speed, we’re hoping that the traffic flow will be a little bit smoother in the downtown core, but at the same time give more safety to pedestrians who may be crossing the roadway,” said Const. Clint Stibbe.

Police say there have been a total of around 360 collision on Richmond and Adelaide combined for the first six months of the year.

“If those speeds are brought down, even if it saves one life, it’s a good investment and good decision by the city,” Stibbe said.

“Anybody that comes in on a green light, provided the traffic is not congested, those individuals should be able to travel a distance on those green lights because they are timed around everybody travelling at 40 km/h.”
