More than 20 girls are showing off their artistic flair this week at the Lethbridge Girls Rock Camp.

“This just gives them a space where they can feel comfortable with other girls,” Lethbridge Girls Rock Camp coordinator Silvana Campus said.

The week-long camp is headed by volunteers who simply want to give girls a platform to learn and perform.

“Being a female musician (myself), I know there’s not as many female musicians,” Campus said. “So it’s just trying to encourage girls and women to get on stage and maybe have that opportunity.”

During the morning, the girls go through an instrument instruction class before breaking into band groups in the afternoon. The camp ends Saturday with a public performance, where each band will perform a song they wrote and produced themselves.

“It’s kind of scary to think about forming a brand new band and writing a song in a week, and they rise to the challenge every time,” Campus said.
