A former long-time Lethbridge city alderman has passed away.

Vera Ferguson was best known for ruffling feathers and getting the job done. She served on council from 1968 to 1980, some years even topping the polls.

During her run, Ferguson called for steps to preserve the city’s historic London road area, helped get the ball rolling on the railway relocation, and was named vice president of the local 1975 Canada winter games.

Former Mayor David Carpenter remembers his time with Ferguson fondly. Carpenter first worked with the Ferguson when he elected to council in 1977.

“She was the original rebel, she didn’t really like this old boys’ network… she wanted to work hard to make sure that real people, just everyday people, had a say in things. So she was not afraid to ruffle feathers to get that, she always had the right goals in mind, she wanted to benefit the city as she saw it,” Carpenter said.
