The Saskatchewan government announced on Thursday that they will be setting up a temporary Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP) flood recovery centre in Estevan.

The centre will provide immediate support and advice to residents who are affected by the recent severe weather and flooding in the community.

PDAP is designed to help residents, small businesses, agricultural operations, communal organizations, non-profit organizations, parks and communities recover from major weather events including flooding.

“I would like to commend the community for their resilience and for the many acts of selflessness demonstrated over the last number of days,” Government Relations Minister Jim Reiter said.

“In the wake of such intense flooding, with so many homes affected, this centre will help the residents of Estevan begin the process of recovery.”

People are now being allowed back to their homes to being clean-up operations.

Residents of the Arborfield Special Care Lodge will also be returning home on Thursday.

A PDAP flood recovery centre will open up next week in the community.

PST relief for businesses

Businesses who have been directly impacted by recent flooding activity in Saskatchewan can apply for relief from penalty and interest charges for filing late PST returns.

Affected businesses must submit a written request for waiver of penalties and interest to the Ministry of Finance. Requests should include the business location and outline the circumstances of how the flood-related conditions prevented the PST return(s) from being filed on time. Requests should be marked as flood related and sent to the following address:

Red Earth First Nation Evacuation

Leaders with Red Earth First Nation north of Prince Albert, Sask. decided Wednesday afternoon to move 200 people out of the community as a precaution due to flood risk.

A Saskatchewan government official says the decision was made because rising water levels along the Carrot River could affect emergency access to the community.

The official says the Red Earth residents will be transported to Saskatoon and housed at a soccer centre and at hotels.
