What is a community school?
A community school is open not only to students but to members of the community. According to the Coalition for Community Schools, the model allows for an integrated focus on academics, health, youth and community development as well as community engagement.
How are they different from public schools?
The Association for Community Education in B.C. says that community schools are open on the weekends, evenings and during the summer, allowing for greater usage out of the school facility. ACEBC notes the model allows community residents to participate in the school and its activities regardless of whether they have children enrolled in the school.
The community school is meant to increase communication between the community and the school, according to ACEBC, by coordinating and integrating community services and implementing strategies for children, youth and families.
