Members of the Jamestown community came together Saturday afternoon for a memorial marking the one year anniversary of Lecent Ross’ death.
The 14-year-old was shot and killed in a home on Jamestown Crescent in July last year.
“I’m just happy that the community came together for my daughter,” said Alicia Jasquith, Ross’ mother.
“I’m happy and thankful for everything that everyone has done.”
Mayor John Tory attended the memorial saying there is still work to be done to engage the community.

“We are taking every step that we can but it’s a process that won’t be solved over night,” Tory said.

“We are looking at some of the root causes and things we can do to address this community.”
Tory says adding community programs and working on police-community relations will help the neighbourhood come together.
“We must not let people divide us in this community and divide us against one another,” he said.
In August last year, Toronto police charged a 13-year-old youth and an 18-year-old man in connection with Lecent’s death.
It wasn’t the first time the Jamestown community had seen violence in the neighbourhood.
On May 15, Candice Rochelle Bobb was fatally shot while 24 weeks pregnant.
Tory added that in the next two weeks, all three levels of government will come together with the school board to meet with young people in the community.
“We are going to solve this problem by working together,” he said
