An alleged case of animal cruelty is being investigated by RCMP after a driver was reportedly seen throwing kittens out of a speeding car on Highway 15 between Moncton and Shediac.

“It was horrible — I never want to see anything like that again, it was really upsetting” said Chantal Maillet from Sainte Anne, who says she witnessed the incident on Canada day.

“I was following this car and he threw a little white cat on the passenger side and be rolled under the car and he got hit of course he did not make it.”

At first Maillet says she though she was seeing things but then, “he threw a second cat, an orange one on the drivers side, and that one flew in the air and hit the trunk and fell on his feet on the highway, so he ran away in the ditch.”

The roughly six-week-old kitten was found a few days later hiding in the grass along the busy highway, according to Dr. Gillian Marsh who is treating the kitten at the Riverview Animal Hospital.

“The skin and the gums and the gingiva had been completely putted off of his little jaw, so his bone was exposed there,” she said.

She performed surgery on the kitten on Tuesday night “to suture it back up into the position that it should be.”

Nicole Thebeau, with Kent County Animal Rescue took the kitten to the vet. She says this type of animal cruelty happens far more often than many people realize.

She says some people see cats as disposable. In the last month alone, Thebeau says she’s responded to at least 30 calls relating to animal cruelty and neglect.

“You know I felt that humans did this to him and we needed to bring him back and try to help as much as we could,” she said.

The kitten is expected to make a full recovery and will be be up for adoption in the coming weeks.

RCMP are investigating the case and are asking any witnesses to come forward with information.

Meanwhile, Maillet has passed on a description of the car and licence plates she saw to police.

“I can’t believe people would do that, with all the other options you have. You can bring it to the SPCA, you can have it adopted, that was not the solution.”
