Fort McMurray apartment fire sparked by cigarette

Fire officials in Fort McMurray say a massive apartment fire, which happened just days after residents began returning to the community, was sparked by a cigarette.

Hunter Langpap of the Fort McMurray Fire Department said an improperly disposed of lit cigarette was to blame for the blaze, which broke out at a four-storey building in downtown Fort McMurray at around 8 p.m. Monday, June 6.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control within a couple of hours. Fire crews said no one was injured in the blaze at Cassia Manor, part of the Franklin Landing complex at 8016B Franklin Ave.

Three buildings make up the apartment complex. There are about 57 units in the building that caught fire.

The apartment fire happened five days after the phased re-entry of Fort McMurray started on June 1, nearly one month after a massive wildfire forced more than 80,000 people to flee the area.
