A conservation manager for Banff National Park confirmed three wolf pups were killed early Monday when they were struck by a CP train in the Bow Valley Parkway.

The pack of wolves was already under observation, so officials know that another pup from the same litter was struck by another train earlier this year.

The mother had a litter of six in the spring. Park officials told Global News she only has two left.

Bill Hunt, resource conservation manager for Banff National Park, said it is not uncommon for wolves to be killed by trains in the park. Hunt said the animals will often go after elk or deer carcasses that have been struck by trains, but they have no evidence to support that was why the three pups were on the tracks.

“We’ve searched the area to see if there was any dead wildlife in the area that may have attracted them down there. We don’t see anything. We haven’t found anything. We’ll continue to watch for that along the railway.”

Hunt said in this case it looks as if the wolves were just using the tracks as an easy travel corridor.
