Selkirk house explodes after illegal drug production, 6-month-old baby uninjured

A six-month-old baby is “lucky to be uninjured,” after an illegal drug operation led to a house explosion in Selkirk over the weekend, RCMP said.

An illegal drug production caused a house explosion in Selkirk over the weekend. A six month old infant was in the house at th etime and was uinjured, but two men were sent to hospital with serious injuries.

On Sunday, RCMP were called on scene at 5:50 a.m. for reports of a fire on the 700 block of McLean Ave.

The explosion happened in a bathroom and caused severe burns on two men, both from Selkirk. Investigators determined the fire was likely caused by “illegal drug production,” RCMP said.

A 19-year-old man, was transported to hospital by STARS, and a 27-year-old man was taken to hospital by ambulance. Both remain in stable condition.

Also in the home at the time of the explosion were four other adults, none injured, as well as the six-month-old infant. The infant was not injured but was taken to hospital as a precaution.

 

“Two men have significant burns to their bodies and a six-month-old child was placed in a very dangerous situation and is lucky to be uninjured,” said Sgt. Bert Paquet, RCMP media relations.

“This is a tragic situation and a reminder of the serious risks involved in the production of illegal drugs. “

RCMP are continuing to investigate.
