Just a few minutes later, he was joined by Penticton resident and second place winner, Olly Piggin.

Piggin had a time of 8 hours, 54 minutes and 17 seconds.

The first female athlete, Gillian Clayton of Vancouver, triumphantly crossed the finish line with a time of 9 hours, 46 minutes and 7 seconds.

More than 2,800 athletes competed in the 30th and final Ironman.

They represent each of the provinces, 44 of the U.S. states and more than 25 countries.

More than 2,000 athletes started their day off with a brisk and chilly swim in Okanagan Lake as part of the 30th annual Penticton Ironman.

The competition got underway early Sunday morning and the first winners are expected to cross the finish line by the early afternoon.

This is the last Ironman competition in Penticton. Next year, the race will be replaced by the Challenge Family competition.
