Forestry and fire crews in Vernon are mopping up and monitoring hot spots at the site of a blaze that started at 9:30 this morning.

The fire was located just above the Birnie Road Landfill between Commonage Road, and there were unconfirmed reports it started with a ‘loud bang’.

“Luckily the fire didn’t get into the trees,” said chief Keith Green of the Vernon Fire-Rescue Services. “We were fortunate to get an Engine from Station 1 here quickly as well as had air support from the B.C. Wildfire Management Branch helicopter dropping water onto the fire right away which stopped the fire from running up the hill on us.”

“Also, we had a general call-out of all of our fire fighters, which include career and volunteer fire fighters from Vernon working alongside Okanagan Landing crews. We also had BC Wildfire Management Branch ground crews and apparatus which helped out tremendously. All of our firefighters should be commended.”
