The federal government is investing just over 100-thousand dollars to support a local company researching an innovative substitute for antibiotics in livestock feed.
Saskatoon-based Prairie Plant Systems is developing new technologies that have the potential to replace antibiotics in animal feed using health-boosting properties of plants like mustard seeds.
“This is the first step in finding alternatives to the use of antibiotics in animal feed,” said company CEO Brent Zettl.
“The long-term goal of our research can have benefits for farmers and consumers alike.”
Researchers have found the use of antibiotics in feedstock is beneficial partly because of its anti-inflammatory properties.
The company says its goal is to develop feed supplements to stimulate an animal’s own immune system to resist infection.
Development of new feed supplements has the potential to improve herd health while reducing losses and costs.
