Could B.C. need to find a new provincial capital? If a new political party gets its way, Victoria and the rest of Vancouver Island will break away from British Columbia and form Canada’s 11th province.
The Vancouver Island Party, which is set to officially launch on Wednesday, claims the island is under threat from climate change, government indifference and economic and environmental injustice.
Party leader Robin Richardson, a former Progressive Conservative MP, says self-determination is the solution.
“Our island has been neglected largely by both federal and provincial governments,” he said. “Most of the money goes to Vancouver and other places.”
“We’d be even better off if we became a province.”
The party plans to field candidates in every Vancouver Island riding in next year’s provincial election.
