Merkel tours Halifax university, signs agreement to study ocean risks

HALIFAX – Angela Merkel has visited Dalhousie University in Halifax, where the school signed an agreement to study ocean risks such as extreme weather conditions and Arctic melting.

The German chancellor briefly toured the university, where she witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Germany’s Helmholtz Association.

Merkel’s stop in Halifax came after two days of meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Ottawa, where she offered her support for a Canada-European Union trade deal.

But she also expressed her concerns with the high carbon emissions from Alberta’s oilsands.

Merkel left Dalhousie University tonight to return to Germany.
