MONTREAL – It’s been a busy week for employees at City Paints on Rachel Street in Montreal’s Plateau Mont-Royal borough and Friday morning was especially hectic.

That’s because Montreal’s Mural Festival is painting the town red, green, and blue which means big business for the local paint store.

“It’s interesting to see the artists from all around the world,” said co-owner Jason Zuckerman. “The different styles they have and all the bright colours they bring to the city.”

That means every colour under the rainbow from ‘Chinchilla’ to ‘Yukon Sky’

Twenty new murals will be going up this year alone. Some are small, but some take up the entire side of buildings and that means a lot of paint.

“They go anywhere between 600 to 800 gallons in a week,” Zuckerman said.

Their own shop is one of the canvases for this year’s event.

Soon it will be transformed into a historical mural complete with gold steps and railings.

As for the actual painting, Zukerman leaves that to the professionals.

“I’ll go there and I’ll look at the murals but I won’t be painting anything,” he said. “I might be grabbing some of the food but I’m not an artist at all.”
