Father’s Day: Global News journalists talk fathers and fatherhood

We’ve all been inspired (and probably embarrassed) by the male role models in our lives and each has taught us a thing or two along the way. With Father’s Day coming up, we thought we’d ask our journalists to share some of the lessons they’ve learned from their dads.

Brittany Greenslade’s dad leads by example

My dad has always been one of my biggest supporters. From the time I was young, he has always led by example. He encouraged me to chase my dreams and never give up, even if chasing that dream meant taking risks and maybe even failing. He has taught me the importance of going after what I want by working hard; being determined and strong-willed; and always acting fairly, ethically and respectfully. He taught me that we are never too old to tackle a new challenge (my dad completed Ironman Canada, only his second triathlon ever, at age 55). Above all else, he has taught me that family always comes first. He continues to live that lesson daily.

Megan Robinson’s dad gives great career advice

A job is just a job; it’s the people who make it. Those are the words my dad, Jim, has repeated time and time again throughout the course of my adult life. His words have rung true in every position I’ve ever held, (soccer referee, radio host, TV sports anchor, etc). Because of my dad’s words, I have been able to maneuver my way through a sometimes tricky industry with grace and kindness. I do this by remembering that the right people can turn a good work situation into a great one. Ultimately, it’s our own happiness that matters the most.

Robin Stickley’s father sets the bar high

My dad has taught me so much. With very few words, most of what I have learned from him (and continue to learn from him) has been through example. Every day, he models what it’s like to love and support his wife and family. He continually sets the bar high for relationships. He has also taught me the fun stuff, like the love of a fast sports car. He taught me to enjoy the details, like taking care of your car inside and out. Finally, (believe it or not) he taught me, at an early age, to love Marmite! I was raised on it.

Brian McKechnie is best friends with his kids

Brian McKechnie and his two boys after a Blue Jays game.

Growing up without a father I always dreaded Father’s Day. To me, it was a time of year when I stood out at school and my classmates would ask questions. My disdain for the “Hallmark holiday” changed when my first son was born and I realized how great being a dad is. Nine years and another son later, my boys and I are best friends. We play together, go on road trips, watch movies and stay up late talking about what they want to be when they grow older. It’s not always sunshine and fun, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything! So to all the dads out there that are active in their kids’ lives, happy Father’s Day!
