Officers were called to a wooded area on the west side of Centre Street N. and Samis Road N.E., northwest of the Centre Street Bridge, at around 8 a.m. by a passerby who made the grisly discovery.

Police said Friday the man who initially called police noticed an odour the first time he walked by on his way to work.

“The second day he stopped, he noticed an object in the trees and then made the call to police,” Insp. Don Coleman said. “It’s a small, treed area.”

Although an autopsy has been completed, police said Friday they had been unable to identify the body.

“The victim is female, potentially between the ages of 20 and 40, with dark hair,” police said. “Her left cheek had a distinguishable mark on it that was covered with some sort of bandage.”

“Not so much a scar, but looks like on the left cheek something has been cut or removed or some type of distinguishable mark that had a bandage over it–which we would surmise was pre-event,” Coleman explained.

When asked about the woman’s nationality, he said it’s difficult to tell “based on levels of decomposition at this point.”

“It appears to investigators that there was some effort put into concealing the body…But we don’t believe it’s from animal activity in the area,” Coleman said.

“We’re not ruling anything out.”
