An Australian child psychiatrist, facing several charges in connection with an incident at a West Edmonton Mall bathroom last month, has voluntarily given up his right to practise medicine, according to a report by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
The report said the Medical Board of Australia and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency disclosed Aaron Szen Voon’s decision was made voluntarily and is effective until further notice.
Voon, 41, was arrested on May 22 after a father allegedly caught him videotaping his son using a urinal at a bathroom in West Edmonton Mall’s Scotiabank Theatre.

A confrontation between Voon, the father and other theatre patrons ensued and was caught on video. Voon was subsequently arrested and charged with making and possessing child pornography as well as voyeurism.

Last week, Voon was released on $75,000 bail by a judge in Edmonton who ordered police to release his passport and allow him to return to Australia under a number of conditions:
- He cannot seek, obtain or continue any employment
- He can’t attend public parks, swimming pool, daycares or schools and can’t have contact with anyone under 18 unless they’re under the immediate supervision or in the presence of parents or guardians
- He must have an address and landline in Perth, Australia and use it to report to his bail supervisor each Friday
- He can’t use a camera, cellphone or any device that can send text or pictures

Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) has said it is working on the case together with the Edmonton Police Service and the Internet Child Exploitation unit (ICE) and had also been in touch with authorities in Australia.
According to the website AusCompanies, which records business registrations, Voon owns the Successful Development and Therapy Centre in Perth, Western Australia.
Voon’s next Edmonton court appearance is scheduled for June 16. It is not clear whether he will appear and if he does, whether he will appear in person or via CCTV.
