Cows at large on Saskatchewan highway cause crash with semi

RCMP say a couple of cows had to be euthanized after a collision involving a semi on a Saskatchewan highway. At around 11 p.m. CT on June 4, multiple dispatches received calls regarding the crash between Maidstone and Paynton.

Police attended the scene along with EMS and Maidstone Fire Department.

Investigators determined that an eastbound semi pulling a trailer had collided with four cattle that were at large on Highway 16.

Maidstone Fire Chief Murray Lundquist said the cows were black coloured and difficult to see at the time of the crash.

The semi forced a nearby car to take evasive action as well.

Lundquist said the semi and car did come in contact but the semi took the brunt of the collision with the cows.

The semi driver was taken by ambulance to hospital in North Battleford. His injuries are believed to be minor.

EMS examined the driver of the car at the scene. She was not injured.

Two of the animals were killed in the crash and RCMP had to euthanize two injured cows.

No charges are expected to be laid.
